Belize is a beautiful, tiny and peaceful country on the western edge of the Caribbean Sea, formerly known as British Honduras. Belize is located south of Mexico, east of Guatemala, and north of Honduras in Central America (map).

Blessed with many natural wonders, Belize contains rain forest-cloaked mountains, hidden river gorges, Mayan ruins, numerous extensive wildlife preserves, one of the largest cave systems in the world and the world’s second longest barrier reef. Belize has a lot to offer to both water lovers and naturalists and is also perfect for folks who just want to relax and chill out in the warm sun and admire the turquoise Caribbean sea!

Despite its small size – roughly that of Massachusetts – Belize has the lowest population density in Central America, a fact that contributes to the relaxed, friendly character.

Culturally, Belize is as much a Caribbean nation as well as a Latin one, really a blend of different races and cultures that include Maya, Mestizo, African and European. A lot of “Ex-Pats” call Belize their home as well.

English is the official language - Belize only gained full independence from Britain 1981 - and Spanish is equally spoken. But it is the Creole – this charming, English based but typical Caribbean language – that is spoken and understood by almost every Belizean.

Belize’s weather is subtropical and generally similar to the one in Southern Florida, the average daytime temperature is 80F (27C) even though it does get considerably warmer during the summer months. The best time to travel to Belize is between December and April when the vegetation is still lush and the skies generally clear.

The local currency is the Belize Dollar with the conveniently fixed exchange rate to the US Dollar (2 BZD = 1 US$). US$ cash and traveller cheques are also accepted everywhere.
